What is the impact of the night-time use of lighting in hospital wards on staff and patients?
There is a body of research demonstrating how circadian entrainment (particularly of melatonin and core body temperature) is affected by light. So, where better to explore this theme than in the context of a hospital where recumbent patients need to be seen by staff at night when both are biologically programmed to sleep? The contexts examined were full-scale environments at hospitals in London and the north of England. The aim throughout was to balance the photometric measurements and objective observations with the subjective experiences of those who work in the context.
