Daylighting and compliance: a time for a critical reappraisal of existing standards and guidelines
Daylight modelling for buildings has only recently matured as a discipline. The current guidelines are largely based on a half-century old overcast sky paradigm, and recent attempts to add a ‘clear sky’ option have not proved successful. With the emergence of evidence suggesting the non-visual health, well-being and productivity effects of natural illumination, daylighting has become a ‘hot topic’. It is important that the wider practitioner community listens to the latest research and how it will influence their work in the near future.
John Mardaljevic is a 'Reader in Daylight Modelling' at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. His first significant contribution in the field of daylighting was the validation of the Radiance lighting simulation program under real sky conditions. This helped to establish the Radiance system as a de facto standard worldwide for lighting simulation. In 2010 Mardaljevic was appointed 'UK Principal Expert on Daylight' for the European Committee for Standardisation CEN/TC 169 WG11.
