Why is it so dark in here?

Many museum and gallery exhibits are fragile objects that would not survive repeated handling. Even where this is not the case, it is generally frowned upon for visitors to touch exhibits. This paper will present the solid data and implications of research into methods of improving the perception of brightness at low light levels. Although experienced lighting designers often have an intuitive knowledge of how to improve the apparent brightness of a lit environment, there is rarely any research to back up their instinct.

Learning about light, how lighting educators are contributing to the professionalisation of lighting design

In April 2011 Educators from the field of Lighting Design met in Milan for the first PLDA Educators’ Summit. Target of the event was to start work on a virtual syllabus to provide a backbone for education in lighting design. In the months after the event, work groups have developed ideas and next steps. The paper will inform on the current status and developments as a further step in the process to establish the profession.

Malcolm Innes, PLDA has worked as a professional lighting designer for 18 years. While working with Kevan Shaw Lighting Design and Speirs and Major Associates, he was involved in the design of large-scale international architectural lighting projects. Malcolm is a member of the PLDA's Lighting Educator's network and has recently contributed to establishing a new MDes in Creative Lighting at Napier University in Edinburgh.
