Preventing light nuisance and light pollution: an international perspective

With the huge and growing increase in the use of artificial light around the world light pollution and light nuisance are growing issues of concern. This paper will offer a comparative and critical survey of legislative, regulatory and design initiatives to prevent it, drawn from the UK, Europe, the USA and the Far East – some of which could be appropriate for other local and national situations.

Carl Gardner is a lighting designer, consultant and well known in the UK’s as an analyst and commentator on the lighting industry. He has been Editor of the ILP’s Lighting Journal for 13 years and is Director of CSG Lighting Consultancy Ltd, specialising in interior, exterior and urban lighting design.
